It needs a SERIOUS POWER to provide you a good and smooth VR experience and in this case by power I mean a good Graphics Card and at least certain amount of RAM.

Here are the MINIMUM requred technical specifications that you need to have and they're verified by HTC Vive and Oculus Rift by themselves:

  • Graphics Card: GeForce GTX 970 or AMD Radeon R9 290 or better.
  • CPU: Intel Core i5 4590 or AMD FX 8350 or greater.
  • RAM: 8GB+
  • Video port: HDMI 1.3
  • Windows 7 SP1 or newer

If you don't already own a gaming PC/Laptop which meet these specific requirements or your gaming station is a little bit outdated then you should definetely update it to these at least minimum requirements.

I will do you a favor and navigate you to the easiest place where you can buy them with probably the best prices. There's a chance that you can come across some great discounts too!!

Actually, I made a price research and it appears that EVGA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti is around the same price tag with GTX 970 and it's better to buy 1050 Ti and it's also a BESTSELLER on Amazon. That's why I'm giving you the GTX 1050 Ti instead of GTX 970. You can also jump to other pages and compare other GPUs with each other from the buttons down below:

HTC Vive VR Headset - THE BEST

HTC Vive is THE KING OF VR HEADSETS and I'm not exaggerating it. It's unofficially and almost officially the best VR headset that has ever been made. There's a great chance that you've heard of it if you have ever made a little research about VR headsets. It's actually the brand that made the world acquainted with VR headsets and everyone who's into getting a high quality VR experience is probably using it.

Here are the technical specs for theones who are interested in:

  • Display: OLED

Let's get to know why is this baby the king of VR and check out it's features that can give a geek seizures - the kind that makes you spit bubbles out of your mouth. GEEKYLEPSY!!!!

FLEXIBLE PLAYGROUND - You can use HTC Vive in many positions. Seated, standing or in a space varying up to 15 x 15 feet (4.5 x 4.5 meters). Thanks to Steam VR tracking you can experience the VR world without falling out of your window.

STEAM VR MAIN SUPPORTER - Are you a Steam user?? Of course you are!! HTC Vive is the main headset for Steam VR platform and EVERY SteamVR GAME is supported with HTC Vive. If you're using Steam you can't go wrong with it. Ever wanted to play Fallout 4 in VR?? It's in SteamVR and only HTC Vive suppored!! All these features make HTC Vive an EXCELLENT choice for VR. It's a VR Headet system developed together with Valve and that's why it has access extensive access and compatibility with Steam. Oculus Rift is also supported by SteamVR but NOT EVERY GAME. You won't be able to play a lot of games with Oculus Rift in SteamVR which are supported only by HTC Vive and that is also a plus for HTC Vive.

Now I want to visually show you what this badboy can do!!!!

Where To Buy HTC Vive????

HTC Vive is THE BEST but also the most expensive headset that you will see in the market. The prices are varying depending on where you get it from BUT DON'T WORRY!! I've found the best prices after my top secret research :))

The BEST PLACE TO BUY HTC Vive VR Headset is Amazon.com and there are various reasons to buy it from there. First of all, it's CHEAPER!! Much more cheaper than buying it from HTC itself. When you look ak the main page of HTC Vive's website you will see that it's available for €699 whil the price for HTC Vive on Amazon is $527.12 and actually the price was higher when the headset first came out!! It may even get cheaper by time and you may get it extra cheaper if you come across with discounts on Amazon, which is a frequent thing.

Also I don't even have to mention the great retail service and amazing cutomer care that Amazon provides. Long story short, GET IT FROM AMAZON!!!! Here's the magical button that will teleporrt you to Amazon's HTC Vive page where you can buy it. Click on it and the future will becom closer to you:

CLICK TO BUY HTC VIVE FROM AMAZON

Oculus Rift

I think all of you have at least once heard about Oculus Rift during your lifetime. It's no doubt one of the best VR headsets EVER. But what makes it different than HTC Vive?? Let's take a look at its specifications first and then we can compare these two gizmos with each other.

//Short Note//

Both of these headsets are AWESOME and they all work GREAT!!!! The only difference of Occulus Rift is that its platform basis is more seperated from HTC Vive because it's not developed together with Valve. Instead it's developed together with Facebook and that's why it doesn't have full support with all SteamVR games. That's why, if you're looking for a headset for gaming on/through PC, I would strongly advise you to get HTC Vive, it's like the standard for EVERYTHING and I don't know a place where it's not supported when it comes to VR.

There are of course games that support Occulus Rift in Steam Store but not all of them will be supporting while HTC Vive will be supported with every SteamVR game.

//End of the Short Note obviously//

Oculus Rift, as I said in the short note, is developed together with Facebook and it's one of the best VR headsets that has ever been made. You won't be able to play every game through Steam Store with it, that's my warning, but just like HTC Vive it also has its own app and games platform which is called "Oculus Store" and also has many exclusive releases that Steam Store may not have. They call their releases "Experiences". Quite a catchy phrase 🙂

Click Here To Check Out Oculus Store

Also, Samsung has created the "Gear VR", name of which you will notice in the Oculus Store Page, which is the "VR Google for Samsung Phone" and it has been created in collaboration with Oculus Rift. That's why you will be able to find Gear VR games available in Oculus Store.

Else of this exclusive point-out it can do anything that other VRs can do and can be used everywhere where VR is included (else of Steam HTC Vive Exclusive games). These were the main differences from HTC. And another factor is that it's CHEAPER!! Not a big price gap maybe but you may save around $150 by buying Oculus Rift instead of HTC Vive, but in my opinion that's not a big price gap and I would get HTC Vive.

Here are the Tech Specs:

  • OLED Display
  • 2160 x 1200 Resolution
  • 90 Hz Refresh Rate
  • Oculus Home Platform for apps and games
  • 360 degres surround sound system, Built in  audio
  • Tracking Area: 5 x 5 feet (two sensors), 8 x 8 feet (three sensors)
  • Built in Microphone
  • Works with Oculus Touch Controller or XBox One controller
  • Sensors: Accelerometer, gyrscope, magnetometer, Constellation tracking camera
  • Connections: HDMI, USB 2.0, USB 3.0

As you can see, the difference between Oculus and HTC Vive also comes in  tracking area. Oculus Rift allows you to operate in a smaller area which is not a good thing when compared with HTC Vive, but all these things are to be discussed in the comparison section, so let's get to ceck out some Eye Porn.

I said that Oculus has its own platform "Oculus Home" and that's where are exclusive apps and games can be found for Oculus Rift VR or Samsung Gear VR. There are many interesting titles that you may get pretty excited about such as "The Invisible Hours" where you inspect the murder of Nicola Tesla and Thomas Edison is involved in the story. Also there are many many other gret experiences you can check out from Oculus Home Store.

Here are some footages from Oculus Rift Experiences:

IGN's list of Top 10 Oculus Rift games to play. The Climb is my favourite!! :

Reaction of this girl is AMAZING:

Here are 5 of VR experiences that should definetely be experienced. I'm not including Google Tilt Brush because I've already shown it to you guys in HTC Vive:

Where To Buy It From??

AMAZON AMAZON AMAZON. As I said before, it's the best place to buy it just as HTC Vive due to the best prices that you come across and don't have to mention the amazing retail service and great customer care.

You can buy it for $399.00 and you may get it even cheaper with Amazon special features like Trade-In or Amazon Prime!! And you'll get 6 free titles included in the whole bundle!!!! Robo Recall, Lucky's Tale, Quill, Medium, Dead and buried and Roybox will come free with Oculus Rift and that's just the icing on the cake.

You can buy Oculus Rift VR Headset by clicking the button down beow and you'll be navigated to the Amazon page to buy it:

Conclusion - What Is The Best VR Headset For PC

  1. Oh, I wish I read this review before Christmas! my teenager son is addicted to Steam and VR Headset was one of his presents this Christmas. The one we got are not that great, so I wish I would read this review and pick HTC Vive VR Headset for him. Yes, they are a bit pricey but would of been a great present for Christmas and his Birthday combined.
Will learn my mistakes, save your website for updates for the next Christmas!

    1. Hey Anna!!

I also wish that you would have read this post before christmas 🙂 But it’s never too late. Thank you for your appreciation and see you around in Santa Got Geek more often :))

  2. Dear Santa,
Can I get one of them for Christmas? XD
But honestly, I’m and artist myself and I can wait to try either HTC Vive VR Headset or Oculus Rift VR Headset together with the Google Tilt Brush!
Thank you for introducing me to them, I just put it on the list of things to save up for!
    Thanks again,
    -Anna.

    1. Hey there my child Evilgoodness!! Santa usually gives only coal to evil children but this time I can make an exception :))

Google Tilt Brush is prbably one of the best toys that an artist can have in their arsenal. It just expands your creativity to unreal levels!!

You definetely hould get one :)) I thank you for your interest  :)) Check out our other content!!

  3. Hello
First of all i must say you have selected a unique name fir your website.. santa got geek.. thats cool..
I too have a VR headset that i got with my samsung edge 7.. but the problem with VR is that your head pains after an hour of movie watching.. does these VR have this prob.. plz lemme know

    1. Thank you for your nice words!!

I also love the name 🙂 I thnk every VR headset will make you dizzy if you spend too much time with it. The same goes with all big screen devices. It’s recommeended to always take a break after 45 mins or an hour. But they’re the best and lenses are manufactured with a different technology than cell phone VR headsets, that’s why you’ll experience less discomforts. Also you’re not going to fall out the window because they come with a bordering system.

  4. I personally found the occulus rift to be the best headset for VR on the PC. While playing the zombie survival game I actually felt so immersed in the environment I almost forgot that it wasn’t real. Im reality excited to see where this technology is moving to in the near future.

    1. Good to hear that!! Oculus is definetely one of the best VR headsets that is around.

Technology will keep moving only forward and in future we probably won’t be able to differ virtual from reality..

  5. Thank you for the detailed review on the best brother headset for PC. I really enjoyed reading it. It seems to me that HTC vive virtual reality system is the best choice for me, especially as it is available for such a low price on Amazon. I just couldn’t quite understand – the lowest Amazon price is for used item or is it a new item?

    1. Hey Arta!!

Thank you for your interest. HTC Vive is definetely my first choice too. And it should be written in Amazon what the exact type the product is and the price for the specific product. Please tell me the price of it, I may exactly help then.

Or you can CLICK HERE to find out the guaranteed new product price – it’s a deluxe HTC Vive with improved sound system.

  6. Man, I gotta say that this VR stuff looks amazing and I had no idea it has gotten this advanced, let alone going all the way back to the 80s!

Reading this makes me want to pick up an HTC Vive, especially with the amount of games that are available for it, as well as future titles that are coming.

One thing that I know for sure I would be trying with it is the Google VR Maps, as it will allow me to travel to many different locations around the world, while still being in the comforts of my own home!

The level of realism with VR now is truly impressive and I know for sure that this will attract lots of people that are not even into gaming towards VR.

My question is, how do you think the Playstation VR compares to these other 2 VR headsets?

    1. It’s MESMERIZING, isn’t it?? 🙂 Probably many people don’t know that it extends back to 80s.

I definetely advise you getting a HTC Vive, you can NEVER go wrong with it!! And I also would do that with Google VR Maps 🙂 But my deepst desire is to work with Google Tilt Brush and create 3D artwork!! VR has splitted to many different branches nd no matter gamer or not, EVERYONE can find something suitable for them in VR!!

Playstation VR is also great but they are two different concepts. Playstation usually uses exclusive products to isolate their players in their zone, such as PS exclusive games. Playstation VR is also a part of that same concept. Actually, I might add ome information about Playstation VR to this article..

  7. I was never really too much into VR but im into PC gaming, a lot. You explained everything really well and it all makes sense. You have covered the major points that are easy to follow so anyone that is looking to get into the VR scene will be able to learn a good few points from you and this article especially. Good work.

    1. Thank you Dominik!!

I’m glad that you liked the article. VR is becoming a vital part of our media now and it will only keep growing!! These headsets will always be on demand and they probably will get cheaper by time and with the new achievments in technology. VR is going to be HUGE in the future and I advice EVERYONE to get one of these headsets for themselves.

  8. These headsets look like a great way to spend some time enjoying oneself after a long days work. I did figure that you would have to update your computer system to really get the most out of these products.

Do you think that these types of things will become second best quickly and people will continually upgrade them like with cell phones or will it be more of an Xbox situation where people get a new one every couple of years?

    1. Hey there Ernest!

Yes, a VR headset can definetely make you enjoy the time of your life and the oppurtunuties of different experiences that it provides is LIMITLESS!!!

And it will only keep getting better. I think they will get upgrades but not on a frequent basis like our smartphones. They will develop and increase in quality and features by time but these intervals, in my opinion, won’t be too short.

  9. Durukan,

I am an avid gamer so I am always reading about the VR equipment and the newest stuff out. You did a great job on your review and it explained to me what exactly I need to do for my ultimate VR experience. The one thing I notice is I usually get dizzy spells when using VR. Do you recommend a remedy for this?

    1. Hey Ryan!!

That’s a common issue with VR. You might get a little diiziness during extended use of VR. For now I can only recommend taking some 5-10 min breaks every hour. I know, it’s hard to let go the magical world of VR but for your health the best practice is to take some breaks.

  10. Quеѕtіоn . My daughter has CP ..lіmіtеd fіnе mоtоr соntrоl іn the hаndѕ . ? What VR wоuld bе bеѕt fоr her ? Not a gаmеr a VR thаt ѕhе саn wаtсh mоvіеѕ . оr look аt рhоtоѕ of places & fаmіlу. Tеthеrеd іѕ ok . Wheelchair wont bе dоіng muсh moving around.. any іdеаѕ??? Thanks in аdvаnсе

    1. First of all I wish health for your daughter. And about the VR headsets, I would recommend getting a HTC Vive. Actually it doesn’t matter because both of these headsets have stand-still mode which means that you don’t have to stand up and walk around the room to experience the VR. You can also use controllers or console to control the character and just put on the headset to be teleported directly into the VR experience. This can be a solution.

Again, I wish the best for your daughter and thanks for your interest 🙂

  11. WOW, they have come a long way with the Virtual Reality Headsets. I have seen them but never used one. I am looking to purchase one for myself now and just started researching about them. I didn’t realize they offer so much, I am not a big gamer so I don’t need anything for gaming but the Oculus RIft looks awesome.

Now it’s decision time for me. Thanks for the great information. I like to know what other people think before I purchase things.

    Thanks.
    Alex

    1. VR is the future and they DEFINETELY offer much more than they reveal. Getting a decent R headset is definetely a must if you want to keep up with the latest and coolest stuff!!

I’m glad that the article was useful for you 🙂 Thank you for your interest!!

  12. Wow, what a great review of the best headset. My grandson’s first love is gaming and I sent him a link to your awesome site. He has spent time looking here and has bookmarked it for future reference. I knew he would appreciate all the information you present here. Thanks!

    1. Thank you Lilian!! I’m gald that you liked it and found omething valuable for yourself!!

  13. I really love the Oculus rift. I have it and love it. It is to me the best one out there.

Although I have never tried the HTC Vive. I will have to definitely work on trying it out. I do have a custom computer system to be able to safely and easily use the Oculus Rift.

I know that all of these VR’s for PC will require certain amount of computer power to run them properly. Each one of them might have slightly different requirements, but if you get the higher end hardware the look and sound of the VR system will be awesome.

I will really consider trying out the HTC Vive, and I will definitely recommend both of them to anyone that would love to try these. You are right they are the best. Also does the HTC Vive go with any kind of computer like windows, mac etc..? or just windows?

    1. Hey there Daniel!!

Oculus Rift is great, I know. And actually they don’t have much difference in quality, they’re both top quality. But the main difference is in the supported platforms. If you’re a gamer and use Steam a lot, then HTC Vive is the best way to go 🙂

As long as you require the minimum amount of necessary hardware power you should be fine. More graphips power has never hurt anybody 🙂

It can be used with every hardware as long as the software supports. To be honest, every computer that I saw which was working compatible with VR was Windows.

  14. Hi
    I love your article
I stumbled across your site and got sucked into your article because it was so interesting.
I had no idea that VR has come so far.
Thanks for enlightening me. I will have to look into it more for myself.
It will be nice when it catches on more and the prices start coming down. Even $500 is more than i would pay right now for a product like this
    Thanks
    Tom

    1. I thank you for your interest Tom.

Yes, VR has taken a HUGE leap since the 80’s. And it will evolve more and more to a better experience. Soon we won’t be able to differentiate the VR from reality.

And the price you pay is nothing next to the experience of VR you get. It’s a smart investment 🙂

I’m so glad that you liked the site! I hope you visit more. I’m also planing on a redesign of the website, so don’t forget to keep up with it 🙂

  15. Awesome info on VR headsets!
I really enjoyed the video you uploaded with Elon Musk (Tesla CEO), he is one of my all time hero’s!
I’ve heard good things about the oculus rift. Just need to save a little $$$

One suggestion, making a drop down menu at the top to organize your categories. Just a suggestion. Keep up the good work!

    1. Thank you for your interest, Chris!

I also like Mr. Elon Musk, he’s one hell of an entrepreneur!

Both Oculus Rift and HTC Vive are AWESOME!!! But I would prefer HTC Vive.

I will definetely consider yoour advice. Actually, I want to totally customize and rebuild the WHOLE website, but I just don’t have the enough knowledge of web dev yet. But the time will come 😀

  16. Hey Santa,

This is really cool! I’ve used Oculus Rifts a few times at special events, and fell in love with the idea of them. I thought at this stage, since it’s pretty new technology, it would be ridiculously expensive but your article has opened my eyes into what the technology involves and that it isn’t as expensive as I thought.

Also side note, what made you think of the name Santa Got Geek? It’s different and definitely memorable, but where does the Santa part fit in? Thanks 🙂

    1. Hey there Cheyenne))

Thank you for your interest 🙂 Technology is definitely evolving to a level that we haven’t thought about before. VR will be the futre and I feel so lucky to witness the latest developments from first hand!

Actually, Santa Got Geek is a side project of mine which started out as an idea of a website where geek minded people could come in anytime to check out cool geeky stuff and get mesmerized. It started out as a poject where you ca find geeky gifts for your loved ones. I haven’t accomplished the design in my mind yet but I’m working on it and I plan to evolve it to a whole different level. So, keep in touch to see what time will bring 🙂

  17. oh my, my son is an avid gamer, but has not had the chance to dive into the VR technology.
We have been thinking about finding the right headset for him to get into – and we really don’t know that much about it – so this guide will come in handy.

Now that I watched that Zombie game video though, I might have to get me headset too, lol. I am only a casual gamer, but that looks like so much fun

    Great info!

    Blessings!

    1. I think it’s about time for both of you to take a deep dive to VR 🙂

I’m glad that you’ve found the right material for you and your son. I’m happy that I could be helpfull to you 🙂

VR is the future and it’s definitely going to become an unseperable part of our lives or gaming. And I have no doubt that you will be extra satsfied with your VR experience :))
